Please join us for a special holiday lunch 11:30 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Fish & Richardson, 500 Arguello Street, Redwood City. Our speakers will be Torben Gronning and Betsy Halaby, giving a presentation on the "Art in Action" Program in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Question: What do a firefighter, an engineer, a zookeeper, an attorney, a physicist, a nurse, and a physician have in common? They and several thousand other parents teach visual art in their kids' school every year, using an innovative educational program from nonprofit Art in Action in Menlo Park. Every year more than 23,000 children in nearly 100 public and private schools in the Bay Area are taught art appreciation, art history, and art techniques by teachers and trained parents. The number is growing as Art in Action expands beyond the Bay Area.
At the Silicon Viking luncheon on December 11 you will learn about how Art in Action in Menlo Park pioneered its approach to teaching visual arts to elementary and middle school students, and how it sees the future expansion of its program. You will also receive a free Art in Action mini-lesson while you enjoy your lunch.
About the speakers:
Torben Gronning directs the overall Art in Action Program, including marketing, business development and strategic partnerships. He is past president and CEO of technology institute DELTA in Denmark and medical diagnostics company Sensititre in England. Most recently he co-founded Wowbrary, a public library consumer marketing service. Torben is a graduate of MIT Sloan School of Management and the Technical University of Denmark.
Betsy Halaby has been with Art in Action since 1987 and ran the organization from 1993-1999. Betsy conducts annual hands-on training sessions, teaching a thousand Art in Action teachers and parent volunteers how to implement the Art in Action curriculum. She has worked with the curator of painting at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Betsy is a graduate of Stanford University and majored in History of American Art.
Please join us for this very interesting lunch; $10 at the door.
